In a nutshell, this sheet music is the complete First Movement of Ludwig v. Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14 (famously known as ‘Moonlight’ Sonata, taken from a poetic description of this, the First Movement, by a music critic of Beethoven’s time).

Every note on this professionally engraved and annotated sheet music is accurately labeled with its musical letter-name, such as C, G, F#, Bb.

What is the official, original name of Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ Sonata?

The formal name of ‘Moonlight’ Sonata, as a complete work in 3 movements, is:

Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, marked Quasi una fantasia, Op. 27, No. 2.

When was Moonlight Sonata written?

Completed in 1801, Beethoven dedicated the complete work, Piano Sonata No. 14, to his pupil Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, the next year (1802). 

Why is it called ‘Moonlight’ Sonata?

The popular name Moonlight Sonata goes back to a critic’s remark after Beethoven’s death, specifically regarding a feeling of moonlight being evoked in this, the slow, haunting, First Movement, which we have for you here for download (this takes you to the sheet music).

What does Quasi una fantasia mean?

In Italian–the most common language for performance directions, in formal Western/European music notation–Quasi una fantasia means, “in the manner of a fantasy.” Lapse into a dream, a meditation, maybe a rich memory–a musically-enhanced memory, when playing this piece, and you will have honored Beethoven’s performance direction!

There are three movements in Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14. The nickname ‘Moonlight’ is technically only a reference to the First Movement, which we are offering here, with this video and sheet music.
